Dustin Comic features Jimmy Buffett this week

As the national unemployment rate for 20-24-year-olds soars, 80 percent of 2009 U.S. college graduates dubbed “boomerang kids” have returned to their parents’ homes after graduation according to CollegeGrad.com. A growing trend around the country, the Boomerang Generation takes center stage in the hilarious comic strip – DUSTIN. Co-created by longtime political and editorial cartoonists Steve Kelley and Jeff Parker, the King Features syndicated comic strip chronicles the life of 23-year-old recent college grad and Boomerang poster-child Dustin Kudlick.
At an age when many young men are setting out to begin their climb up the corporate ladder, Dustin Kudlick lives at home with his parents and younger sister. At 23, Dustin is unmarried, unemployed, and unable to see any of that as a problem.

Dustin rejects the nine-to-five grind, insisting that in the long run, one of his natural talents will prove more lucrative. Maybe he’ll pursue his gift for stand-up comedy (“Seriously, Dad, I’m like four Viagra jokes away from a spot on The Tonight Show”), or take his yet-unrealized golf prowess to the professional tour (“All I need is a high-dollar endorsement deal. How about if I wear a visor with ‘Mom and Dad’ printed on it?”). Or perhaps Dustin should simply patent one of his inventions and let the royalty checks pour in (“You just press this button and it makes the sound of a doorbell. So when you’re stuck on the phone with a telemarketer, or Aunt Darla…”).
Dustin’s father, Ed Kudlick, is a lawyer who handles everything from criminal defense to divorce. “Oftentimes,” he notes, “it’s hard to tell the difference.” Practical and thrifty, Ed is at constant odds with his fashion-forward wife, Helen, who hosts a popular radio talk show. A local celebrity, Helen never misses an opportunity to update her wardrobe. “How much does the newspaper subscription cost you?” Dustin asks his father one day. As Helen peruses department store display ads, Ed responds, “About $800 a month, but that’s just a guess.”

As unlikely as it seems that Dustin will leave the nest anytime soon, his teenage sister cannot wait for her chance. Megan Kudlick is on a determined trajectory for success. A precocious, straight-A student, she is intent on taking her rightful place at Harvard and then on somebody’s corporate board.

Until he strikes it rich, Dustin is dispatched on part-time assignments for Turbo Temps, an employment agency operated by Simone Fontenot, a businesswoman who keeps Dustin around mainly as a punching bag for her acidic wit.

Maybe someday Dustin will grow up. Maybe he’ll get married, buy a house and answer to a wife, an alarm clock and a boss like every other guy. But until he does, Dustin is one very good reason to keep calling your comic pages The Funnies.

Jimmy Buffett on the BP Gulf Oil Spill

Gulf oil spill: Jimmy Buffett tells Florida beachgoers to stay upbeat

June 5, 2010 4:00 pm

Musician Jimmy Buffett, wearing his Margaritaville-brand flip-flops, stood Saturday on a pier at tar-ball blotched Pensacola Beach and led a pro-beach rally, urging Floridians to "not get a 'sky is falling' attitude" over the looming oil slick.

Buffett said he has survived hurricanes, getting shot at in Jamaica and a plane crash, and he insisted he's ready to ride out the oil-spill disaster that in the last two days has hit the white sand beaches of the Florida Panhandle.

"This is an environmental disaster nobody asked for, but Floridians are a tough people," Buffet said to the crowd of 1,000 beachgoers.

Tar balls swept along by strong winds hit more of the Panhandle coast Saturday, including Perdido Key at the far west end of the state and Grayton Beach, about 60 miles east of Pensacola Beach. A dozen tar mats — slabs of thickened crude as long as 30 feet — were found near Navarre Beach.

As spill-response workers collected oil blobs in the background, Buffett was joined by Gov. Charlie Crist. Although the expanding slick is largely offshore, it continues to drift east and threatens to devastate the state's crucial tourism industry.

For Crist, a sharp decline in visitors could drive up coastal unemployment and drive down state tax revenues. And for Buffett, crude oil washing ashore could spoil summer revenues as he opens his $50-million Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Pensacola Beach.

"People ought to come out here — it's beautiful," said Crist, putting up with an already hot and humid morning and sweating through his shirt. "Jimmy's opening a hotel here next week."

"Just batten down the hatches," Buffett said.

Strumming his six-string, Buffett ushers in summertime fun

Strumming his six-string, Buffett ushers in summertime fun

By James Reed, Globe Staff June 18, 2010

MANSFIELD — Jimmy Buffett comes around these parts every year, usually in synch with the start of summer. His timing surely is intentional. Even in dreary weather, he brings with him the season’s standbys: flip-flops, Hawaiian shirts and skirts, and, most of all, an escapist attitude that happiness is just a beach and drink away.
New England, with its devout nation of Parrotheads, holds a special place in Buffett’s heart. Last night at the Comcast Center — Buffett still affectionately calls it Great Woods — was a reminder that no matter how often Buffett plays, it’s no longer just a concert: It’s an event (and it repeats tomorrow night).
The evening was already charged with the hope that the Celtics would pummel the Lakers in the NBA Finals, and Buffett seized the moment to stoke the audience. When he suddenly called out “Beat LA!’’ in the middle of “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,’’ a duet with guitarist Mac McAnally, that chant later rippled throughout the sold-out crowd.
At this point, a sense of surprise is not part of a Jimmy Buffett show. Even with a varied set list, you know what you’re going to get, from “Margaritaville’’ to “Fins’’ to “Cheeseburger in Paradise.’’
As always, last night was as much about the audience’s engagement as the music. During “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,’’ scenes from the day’s tailgating were shown on the video screens. (The woman who bared her breasts for the cameras was a big hit.)
Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band was its usual well-oiled machine, switching from country (“Back Where I Come From”) to reggae (“Jamaica Mistaica”) to baby-boomer anthems (the final encore of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”). The show’s second half shook off some of the earlier island vibe, particularly on a muscular rendition of “Tampico Trauma,” and Buffett imbued “A Pirate Looks at Forty” with a quiet grace.
It was up to Ilo Ferreira, a Cape Verde native who recently lived in Rhode Island, to get the festivities under way. His acoustic set was short but long on heart. Ultimately, though, it was the soundtrack to a familiar sight: flying beach balls ready for a trip to “Margaritaville.”
